Pearl City High School Music Performing Arts Learning Center
Learning Centers were created as Programs of Excellence within the Department of Education. There are currently 29 Learning Centers statewide functioning in a manner similar to that of magnet schools. They are designed to increase and broaden the abilities of students with the interest, initiative, and discipline to explore the limits of knowledge and learning. Learning Centers are open to all public school students who meet individual center requirements. Geographic Exceptions (G.E.) are available to students outside their attendance areas. Students may also remain at their home school and attend a LC part-time or after school.
At their entry level, these programs are not selective; they allow students with common interests to stand at the doorway to extensive knowledge in a given field. As the students progress in the curriculum, they are able pursue learning with greater depth than is usually possible in the general classroom.
At Pearl City High School, we offer a wide breadth of music courses that allows students to pursue an education in music. The band program is the focal point of our learning center, and thus most of our activities are geared towards wind instrumentalists. Annually we offer marching band, jazz band, 3 different concert bands, and the Uta Matsuri Band. Other events that round out the learning center curricula is the annual Oahu Marching Band Festival, Pearl City Complex Music Festival, and the Hawaii High and Middle School Band Festival.
